Burners Without Borders: A Humanitarian Cause Born at Burning Man

I love the story of Burners Without Borders’ birth. We all remember Labor Day weekend, 2005 because that’s when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. I was at Burning Man. My friend, Tomas, walked around our camp with his bullhorn, announcing the terrible news. A few people cried. One man – who shall remain nameless – told Tomas to knock it off because the news was a downer. Personally, I felt deeply sad for the people of New Orleans.

But some burners did more than mourn. They raised $42,000 in two days, hopped in their cars and drove down to Louisiana and Mississippi to distribute supplies and help however they could.
