Civic Ignition Update: Made in the Shade

Our 2018 Rocky Mountain Civic Ignition grant recipient is Made in the Shade!

The Wasatch Community Gardens are organic and solar powered, stewarded by a very environmentally and forward thinking organization. The Wasatch Community Gardens work with homeless women and provide produce to ESL schools.

Made in the Shade project participants teamed up with Wasatch Community Gardens Green Team to create a shade structure between two shipping containers. The shade is for The Green Team: a group of women facing homelessness that are in a program where they earn a competitive wage while learning job skills and organic gardening.   Made in the Shade also purchased materials for their greenhouse.

Project lead Kameron Hammond says:

‘We worked a full day in the garden helping with compost, gardening and doing whatever needed to be done. We were shown radical inclusion because Green Team allowed us to be included in their work day.  We worked side by side with the women in this amazing program. 50 people participated in this working day, and now the structure is enjoyed by all who engage with the Wasatch Community Garden.

The project has helped the women in the program to feel “seen”.  They now have shade and shelter from the rain while they eat and sort seeds.  This has helped our Burner Community see that homeless people are people too. We are all humans doing the best we can.  I think it is helping bridge the gap between us and the community at large.’

The Civic Ignition Grant supported 90% of the overall budget of this project.
