Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden: 2018 Community Microgrant Update

One of our 2018 Community Micro Grant recipients is Community Garden Planters and Large Scale Sculpture for the Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden in Philadelphia, USA.

Project leader Pedro Ospina applied this grant to build raised planting beds and a large scale sculpture for Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden, which already hosts a wide range of activities in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. Participants from the community learned basic carpentry and farming skills, as well as cement art-making. 15 people participated in the execution of these projects and the BWB Micro grant covered approximately 10% of the overall budget.

Pedro Ospina describes the 10 Principles exemplified by the project in 2018:

Communal Effort – through three site specific artworks produced collaboratively this past year
Civic Responsibility- every Wednesday was potluck night open to everyone
No Spectators- dance parties and music festivals where organized throughout the year
Immediacy -workshops, theater performances, and collaborations with local organizations happened throughout the year.

Over 850 people have attended events and interacted with this project so far this year. The project has changed the community because now our neighborhood is more aware than ever about the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of our streets.
