PartyCiParade: Celebrating Everyday Climate Heroes
Participation + Party + Parade
What if climate activism gave people more reasons to celebrate—and more ways to participate?
PartyCiParade is a stubbornly optimistic form of civil protest that celebrates the positive actions people are already taking to address the climate crisis. Combining participation, music, movement, and public appreciation, it turns a parade into an invitation to recognize everyday climate heroes.
From a Conversation to Collective Action
The idea grew from a conversation in Vienna in November 2024 between creator Leo “Leobard” Sauermann and Steven Raspa. Drawing inspiration from San Francisco’s former “Burning Man pARTiciPARADE!” event, they explored how climate activism could become more fun and participatory while celebrating people taking positive climate action.
Since then, PartyCiParade has moved from idea to practice, with experiments at climate protests and at Schönburn, where it became a closing ritual to recognize participants’ contributions.
Learning Through Participation
Each experiment has offered lessons about what happens when an idea meets a community. At Schönburn, participants initially formed circles before finding their way into a moving parade. Then spontaneous hugs brought the procession to a standstill—a joyful reminder that facilitation needs to make room for connection while keeping the celebration moving.
That spirit of experimentation is part of the project: try it, learn together, and adapt it to your community.
Why It Matters
PartyCiParade offers a way to make climate action visible, welcoming, and social. By celebrating what people are already doing, it creates opportunities for recognition and invites others to join in.
For the BWB community, it’s an example of applying participatory culture to a real-world challenge: using creativity and collective celebration to support civic action.
