BWB Detroit, Michigan (USA)

The Detroit chapter was founded in 2008. We call our project “Burners without Borders Detroit-Homeless Backpack Project” where we do direct action care to people on our streets to ease the discomfort of homelessness. We recently began another program as well called “Free Store”.

We are a 100% volunteer organization. We collect and fundraiser locally by holding small events in our community to cover our costs.

Our Goal: To find and assist people on the streets who do not go to shelters, and offer them a supply-filled backpack. The backpacks are stuffed with socks, gloves, a hat, scarves, emergency blankets, rain poncho, more socks, juice, hand warmers, water, a soft cereal bar, four-to-five canned goods from various food groups, a can opener, a toiletry pack that includes tissue, handi wipes, toothpaste, a toothbrush and lip balm..and more if items are donated!

During the warmer months, we open our Free Store which offers  free goods and haircuts. We also work with other groups to help get medical attention to folks and their pets in need.

Over the past seven years we have given out over 1800 backpacks. Each year our numbers grow. We know that we do not have that skill-set to get people off the streets but we hope to make one night a little easier to bear with a little bit of kindness, compassion and non-judgment.
