BWB London in reforming in 2026! Want to get involved?
BWB London is looking for a clever structural solution to keep the rain off the food and the volunteers at the Refugee Community Kitchen (RCK) Sunday outreach.
THE CHALLENGE: The 5-Minute “Dry Zone” Shelter Solutions for RCK Brixton.
The Situation
London winters are relentless. Right now, RCK volunteers in Brixton are the “human umbrellas”—protecting hot meal service with little more than hoodies and hope.
We need a physical structure that provides a dry, dignified space for guests and servers alike.
The Technical Brief
We aren’t looking for a standard, flimsy gazebo that will catch the wind and break in three weeks. We need a tactical shelter with the following constraints:
- The “Car Boot” Rule: The entire system must pack down small enough to fit in a shared kitchen or a volunteer’s small car.
- The 5-Minute Deploy: It needs to be set up and struck down in minutes, even with cold hands.
- Modular Coverage: At a minimum, it must cover 1 or 2 standard 1.8m trestle tables, but we love ideas that can snap together to cover more ground.
- Wind-Ready: It needs a smart weighting or tethering system that doesn’t rely on drilling into the Brixton pavement.
- Aesthetic Intent: We want something that looks like an invitation, not a construction site.
Can you help us build it?
This is a grassroots mutual aid effort. We are looking for:
- Structural Designers: People who understand tension, frames, and waterproof textiles.
- Tinkerers: Have you hacked a van awning or a festival tent into something better?
Donations of Materials:
High-quality tarps, poles, or deadstock outdoor gear.
The Goal:
To move from”surviving the weather to hosting the community, no matter what the London sky is doing.
