Better Before Project
The Best Before Project (BBP) is a London-based volunteer initiative dedicated to reducing food waste by collecting surplus and “best before” dated food from suppliers and redistributing it to local community groups, charities, and organizations. Addressing the 8.3 million tonnes of edible food wasted annually in the UK, BBP combats the environmental and social impacts of food waste while challenging misconceptions about food labeling.
Currently operating through teams in North East, West, and South London, BBP has already redistributed over 30 tonnes of food since launching in April 2011. To expand its reach and efficiency, the project seeks funding to purchase a second-hand low-emission van, enabling the collection and delivery of up to 150 tonnes of food per year while reducing emissions from multiple smaller journeys.
BBP is committed to environmentally responsible operations, including route planning for fuel efficiency, recycling all packaging, and using repurposed materials. The project fosters community empowerment by engaging local volunteers and partners—such as Rhythms of Life and the Salvation Army—who contribute skills, resources, and networks. As part of a growing movement, BBP continues to raise awareness and inspire collective action toward a more sustainable and connected food system.
