Burners Responding to Rebuild Nepal 2015

Nepal has recently been shattered by two major earthquakes. Thousands of lives are lost, and millions are without housing and clean water. In 3 weeks, the monsoon will hit Nepal, and force this already desperate country into more catastrophic challenges. The monsoon will not show any mercy – but you, you have an opportunity to show yours.

Please help us.

Rebuild Nepal is a direct aid, non profit, disaster relief organization providing emergency housing and living infrastructure in Nepal after the Earthquakes in May 2015.

We have a unique idea that we want to introduce to the disaster relief effort. We are about to build community villages complete with small cubicle homes, clean water, toilets and shared kitchens together with the local people in Nepal with a simple modular lego-like structure.

Right now we are gathering the funding and volunteers to build our first village, and in the meantime we are helping distribute food and medicine to  the mountain areas north of Katmandu with dear friends and local partners that were on the ground since day 1 of the earthquake and have since provided thousands of shelters to the areas where none of the big organizations have or will likely reach.

What we believe in: We believe in the principles of direct aid, locally anchored solutions, low administration costs, sustainable housing, long term thinking and modular infrastructure. We want to have a significant positive impact on the life quality of the people in Nepal with our strategies, not just providing emergency aid, but to build long term solutions that work.

How we work: We are working with a very elegant and brilliant design model for our villages. The structure was first developed for a Burning Man camp, The lost Hotel, at by Scott Mahoney which proved to work really well in a harsh environment like Black Rock city.

The structure is simple to setup and assembles rapidly. Each cube can house a family, and a community can co-exist, create shade and shelter for each other, sharing resources like water, toilets and a kitchen. A very well thought out design, it consists of 4 simple components that can be sourced locally and assembled quickly on site.

Model of Structure

In phase 1, with no nails or screws, the structure is put together and balanced by ropes that are tied in crosses in between each cubicle. The result is a super strong structure, earthquake resistant, that creates fast shelter from wind, sun and rain.

In the 2nd phase, the cubicle structure can be turned into a ‘real’ building later by adding walls of either earthbags or plywood in between the cubicles, and thereby solving the need for a long term housing solution.

In the phase 3, the idea is to transfer as much knowledge of how to build and produce these structures locally so that the model becomes viral, and new villages can arise.

Locals in Charge: We understand that we must have our solution locally anchored, to allow the people in Nepal to take ownership of our support, so that they can start producing new housing and sanitary structures for themselves moving forward.

The first village we build, will therefore be a working camp, that will produce the components for new cubicle structures that will be built for other villages. In this village we will house a mix of our volunteers and a group of local passionate souls that wish to contribute to the further rebuilding of new communities in Nepal.
