Ciudad Peronia Featured in a New Film

October 30, 2024

Join us for a special San Francisco screening and fundraiser for the new feature documentary Comparsa on November 21st at 6:30PM!

WATCH: Comparsa Trailer

Comparsa immerses audiences in a community on the outskirts of Guatemala City, where  sisters Lesli and Lupe lead young women in arts-driven civic action to combat violence. The film centers on one particularly notorious incident, where 41 girls were burned to death in the custody of the State. Among the dead is Lesli’s good friend, Siona. In this heartrending-yet-triumphant documentary, the sisters deploy their artistry in a grand public showcase called a comparsa. They take to the streets on stilts, wielding giant puppets and breathing fire. The comparsa changes the course of their lives and inspires a new generation of leaders in the process.

A little more background: Comparsa is directed by Emmy-winning writer of The Social Dilemma and Chasing Coral, Vickie Curtis and Doug Anderson. While the film is the fruit of 15 years of collaboration between our producer Anna Hadingham, and the youth organizers from Ciudad Peronia featured in the film, we have spent the last five years filming in Guatemala, and are excited to launch an impact and educational campaign to reach youth audiences around the world in 2025.
