Hidden Pūpūrangi

Whangārei, Te Tai Tokerau, Aotearoa New Zealand

Hidden Pūpūrangi combines ecological education, cultural knowledge, and community art through a series of free workshops teaching participants to weave endangered pūpūrangi snails from harakeke (flax). The project culminates in a public art hunt where the handcrafted snails are hidden throughout the community, inviting people of all ages to learn about local biodiversity, tikanga, and ways to support one of the region’s unique and threatened species.
