Temple of Re:Creation: 2024 Microgrant Update

Project Evolution The Temple of Re:creation has seen significant growth since its inception. Originally planned as a land-art installation, it has now transformed into a full geodesic dome, maintaining its artistic spirit while aiming for permanence and greater impact. This shift was driven by the community’s desire to create something that would last and provide long-term benefits. The decision reflects the power of community engagement and the importance of responsive project planning.

Art Residency and Community Collaboration The construction of the Temple of Re:creation is part of a pilot art residency in Baranivka. This initiative attracted 15 women who joined the building process, along with several local experts. The collaboration was a highlight of the residency, showcasing the potential for community-driven projects to inspire creativity and empowerment. The experience provided a platform for participants to gain new skills, especially in construction, and to engage in a hands-on, transformative learning process.

Key Milestones

  1. Foundation and Material Acquisition: Thanks to the generous grant from BWB, the project laid its foundation and purchased essential materials and tools. This step was crucial in ensuring that the project could proceed smoothly and meet the community’s needs.
  2. Project Delay Due to Weather: The construction process paused due to unfavorable weather conditions, but it has provided an opportunity to reflect and prepare for the next phase of building. The delay has also given participants time to plan for the next season with better-informed approaches.
  3. Empowerment Through Learning: One of the most rewarding outcomes has been the empowerment of participants, particularly the women who joined the residency. For many, this was their first experience in physical construction, and it sparked a newfound confidence and curiosity. Two women were so inspired by the process that they decided to pursue further training in geodesic construction. Their commitment to returning with new skills to lead future phases of the project is a testament to the impact of community-based learning.

Impact and Future Plans The Temple of Re:creation is not just a building; it’s a catalyst for community regeneration and dialogue around empowerment, community, and art in times of adversity. The geodesic dome will serve as a permanent space for local events, gatherings, and workshops, reinforcing the role of art as a tool for social change. The residency has already initiated a significant cultural exchange, bridging gaps between local and visiting artists, and fostering a sense of shared purpose.

The upcoming phase of the project will focus on completing the construction and activating the space as a community hub. The goal is to continue building on the momentum created by the residency, ensuring that it remains an inclusive space for local women and experts alike.
